Devastating Earthquake in Nepal - How you can help!

The following is an excerpt from a Peel/Unicef Newsletter sent home today, Tuesday April 28, 2015...

On Saturday April 25, 2015, a devastating 7.9 magnitude earthquake struck Nepal, affecting the area around the capital city of Kathmandu.  The Nepal earthquake, and nearly 60 aftershocks, have caused substantial structural damage across Nepal, resulting in the deaths of over 4,000 people, with thousands more injured and displaced.  Nearly one million children need immediate assistance.  We need to reach them urgently with medical supplies, clean water and protection.

We can make a difference in the lives of children and their families.

Your child brought home a newsletter today explaining that the Peel District School Board has set Friday May 1st as Toonie Friday

Our class discussed how much money our class could donate to Nepal if everyone brought in a toonie - $40.00!!

Helping out is easy!  This is a completely VOLUNTARY campaign and any contributions are welcome! Whether you send in a loonie, toonie, or a cheque made out to our school, your contribution will make a difference!

Thank you for lending a helping hand to those who need it most!

Dentist Visit & Presentation

The awesome team from Salvaggio Dentistry in Brampton were kind enough to spend the day at our school working with our students.  Dr. Salvaggio and his fabulous team of dental hygienists were so personable, professional, and worked great with our class.  They showed the students the proper way to take care of their teeth, which includes brushing and flossing techniques.  We are so very grateful for their visit, as well as they great loot bags they brought for the kids!

Community Cleanup

Last week, our class took some time out to help do our part in cleaning up the school yard.  Armed with gloves and garbage bags, we were able to tidy a good-sized area of our field.  I am very proud of the students and their hard work!!

Happy Vaisakhi

Happy Vaisakhi, for those of you who celebrate it.

I love learning about all kinds of wonderful traditions and celebrations with the students.  Please feel free to share your stories and pictures with the class.

Celebrating Earth Day with The Lorax

To celebrate Earth Day, our class has viewed the movie, The Lorax, by Dr. Seuss.  Please feel free to ask your child a few questions about the movie, such as:

What is the message Dr. Seuss wanted his readers to get from The Lorax?

Why does the Lorax speak for the trees and the other animals?

If you were the Lorax, what would you do to help protect our Earth?

Throughout the month of April, our class will discuss Earth Day, and the importance of caring for our Earth.

Here is a link you can go to with some fun ideas you can do at home:

Learning about Easter Around the World

Throughout the year, our class has been learning about various celebrations and traditions that occur in Canada and throughout the world.  This past week we learned about Easter traditions in Canada as well as in other parts of the world.  More specifically, we learned about an Easter tradition out of Ukraine - Making Pysanky (Decorated eggs).  Here are some pictures of the students painting their own decorated eggs (pysanky).
